Pronunciation Challenges

People commonly complain about the inadequacies of the English spelling system and about the difficulties that arise when they try to pronounce unfamiliar words. Many other languages are not plagued with these problems. Native speakers of English who are learning Czech, Finnish, Spanish, or Polish are delighted to discover that the pronunciation of a word in these languages can be predicted with a high degree of accuracy by its spelling. And conversely, the correct spelling of a word can be fairly easily deduced from its pronunciation. Unfortunately, in English the correlation between spelling and pronunciation is not as close. Just consider, for example, the letter a, which represents a different vowel sound in each of the following words: pat, mane, father, any, village, waffle, wall, was. Or consider the short e sound in pet, which may also be spelled a (any), ae (aesthetic), ai (said), ay (says), ea (thread), ei (heifer), eo (leopard), ie (friendly), oe (roentgen), and u (burial).

How To Improve Your Pronunciation

Here's How:

  1. Learn the following rules concerning pronunciation.
  2. English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic.
  3. In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length).
  4. English pronunciation focuses on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, non-stressed, words.
  5. Stressed words are considered content words: Nouns e.g. kitchen, Peter - (most) principle verbs e.g. visit, construct - Adjectives e.g. beautiful, interesting - Adverbs e.g. often, carefully
  6. Non-stressed words are considered function words: Determiners e.g. the, a - Auxiliary verbs e.g. am, were - Prepositions e.g. before, of - Conjunctions e.g. but, and - Pronouns e.g. they, she
  7. Read the following sentence aloud: The beautiful Mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.
  8. Read the following sentence aloud: He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to do any homework in the evening.
  9. Notice that the first sentence actually takes about the same time to speak well!
  10. Even though the second sentence is approximately 30% longer than the first, the sentences take the same time to speak. This is because there are 5 stressed words in each sentence.
  11. Write down a few sentences, or take a few example sentences from a book or exercise.
  12. First underline the stressed words, then read aloud focusing on stressing the underlined words and gliding over the non-stressed words.
  13. Be surprised at how quickly your pronunciation improves! By focusing on stressed words, non-stressed words and syllables take on their more muted nature.
  14. When listening to native speakers, focus on how those speakers stress certain words and begin to copy this.

Tips:

  1. Remember that non-stressed words and syllables are often "swallowed" in English.
  2. Always focus on pronouncing stressed words well, non-stressed words can be glided over.
  3. Don't focus on pronouncing each word. Focus on the stressed words in each sentence.

    Beautiful Love

    Always, deep within my soul,
I know we have a love like no other.

only hope for and dream of,
    but few ever experience.
Our love is magical beyond belief.
    Always, without hesitation,
    you give of yourself completely.
You have reached the very depths of my soul,
bringing out emotions I never knew I had
and unveiling an ability to love

    Learning English - Pronunciation tips

Good pronunciation is very important for good spoken communication. However you do not have to speak like a native English speaker to have good pronunciation.

There are many different natural varieties of English pronunciation in Britain and around the world. The activities and resources in this part of the site are designed to give an introduction to certain features of standard British English pronunciation, which is sometimes called Received Pronunciation (RP).

There are interactive and downloadable activities and materials which can be used for self-study or for teachers with lower-intermediate students.

    Resources
Background information and other general resources on the topic of pronunciation.

    The sounds of English
There is a system for writing the sounds of English. If you know this system you can pronounce any English word perfectly without a teacher by looking in a learner's dictionary.

    Radio Programmes
Three radio programmes on the topic pronunciation. The programmes feature Alan Stanton, materials writer and pronunciation expert. You can download the full programmes along with the script and audio examples.

    Similar sounds
There are some vowel sounds in English which are very similar. It's easy to get them wrong as those different sounds might not appear in your language. For example, Spanish speakers may find it very difficult to hear the difference between the words 'ship' and 'sheep'.

Each of the five units gives practice in some of these 'minimal pairs'. You can listen to examples and then you have the chance to test how good your hearing is in interactive exercises.

    Unit 1: Key and Pin

    Unit 2: Book and Do

    Unit 3: Door and Coat

Unit 4: Egg, Cat and Cup

    Unit 5: Sock and Coat

    Building knowledge
In these units we give more information about different elements of English pronunciation. There are also interactive and downloadable exercises to help you build your understanding of pronunciation.
